Miramichi River Fly Fishing

Miramichi Fly Fishing - Salmon Pools

A Salmon Pool is a section of the river where salmon will stop in their long journey from the Atlantic Ocean before continuing up the river to spawn. They may stop because of a natural obstacle in the river, such as a rocky bar with very little water flowing over it. This will cause the salmon to stop in the deeper water below the obstacle before proceeding on up the stream.
They will also stop in the deep water at the mouth of a stream or brook because of the colder water flowing from the tributary. The Cain's river salmon is a "late run" fish that enter the river later in the fall. Hundreds of fish will lay in the cold, deep water at the mouth of the Cain's River and Black Brook before continuing their long journey up the Cains River to spawn.
The mouth of the Bartholomew River at Blackville, N.B. is another pool where salmon will lay because of the cooler, deeper water below the mouth of that river.

This section includes photographs and descriptions of salmon pools on the Miramichi River System. (This will be updated as time and work allows.)
